About PDF Page Numbers

Our free PDF Page Numbers tool adds page numbering to any PDF document. Choose from multiple positions (top or bottom, left, center, or right), set your starting number, pick a font size, and select from several formatting styles. The tool embeds the numbers directly into the PDF using the standard Helvetica font, ensuring they display correctly everywhere.

How to Add Page Numbers

Formatting Options

Choose from four page number formats: plain numbers (1, 2, 3), dashed style (- 1 -, - 2 -), with prefix (Page 1, Page 2), or with total count (1 of 10, 2 of 10). You can also position the numbers at six different locations on the page and adjust the font size from 6pt to 36pt.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I start page numbering from a number other than 1?
Yes. Use the 'Starting Number' field to set any starting number. This is useful when your PDF is part of a larger document.
What font is used for the page numbers?
Page numbers are rendered in Helvetica, a standard PDF font that is available on all PDF readers without any additional font embedding.
Will this work on scanned PDFs?
Yes. Page numbers are drawn as an overlay on each page, so they work on any PDF regardless of whether the content is scanned images or digital text.
Can I change the color of the page numbers?
The current version uses a dark gray color that works well on both light and dark backgrounds. Custom color options may be added in a future update.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. Everything is processed locally in your browser using JavaScript. Your files remain on your device at all times.
